This is a very common term repeated over and over again in India. You see many people say it on TV and in rallies when our country celebrates its "Independence day" or "Republic day". The main question is Do we really mean it ?
When you are in a movie theater and while coming out at the end of the movie, you see many people just throwing things on the floor. The bad part is no one thinks of picking things they dropped on the floor. The worse part is that people trample on the food and walk away. Next time you do this please remember the people who dont get food to eat.
When you see people walking on the road, they just eat something and throw the wrapper on the street. Do they think that they are do this in front of the kids who will eventually do the same thing.
Unfortunately, our politicians are no different. They just keep throwing things around ( also their weight around) and this gives people the idea that if they do it why cant us.
I know what you are thinking... :)... that just me doing things is not going to be enough, but remember the famous saying "Boond boond se hi sagar banta hai".
Just imagine if some one comes into your house and throws things on the floor, will you just let them do that... even if you do the moment they leave you clean it up. Why can we think of doing the same thing when we are on the street. When you are in the car you usually carry a plastic bag and collect the trash so as to make sure that your car doesn't get dirty. Why cant we pick up after us, even when we are on the road. Why is it that we cannot take the responsibility of keeping our own country clean. People keep saying that nothing can be done in India, but why cant we try.
If our freedom fighters would have said "nothing can be done" we never would have been an independent country. When an Indian is in the US, they make sure never to litter there why is it that when the same person comes into India he forgets these things.
The bottom line is that " The future of our country is in our hands" . If we don't become responsible about our actions they we cannot expect the country by itself to change. When every citizen of India becomes responsible towards her she will truly become "mahaan".
Like Amitabh Bachchan said in one of the IIFA awards
If not now When ?
If not you Who ?
India is our country lets make it a great country.
I know that i cannot change everyone in India, but my only hope is that if i can change even one persons thinking i will think that i have achieved something in life.
